The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle

The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle

Published by: Corgi Childrens.
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal
Tagline: Accidents happen, our bones shatter, our hearts break, we stay alive.
Rating:**** (Literally scraped it)

What could I say about this book?

The protagonist is seventeen year-old Cara whose family have a period every year where something bad happens. It's literally thirty-so days of lots and lots of injuries caused by tumbling bridges, falling off a bed and more. But don't worry, noone thinks they're getting abused or anything which would probably be one of the things school might consider. Yet noone truly knows why their family are targeted and it's up to Cara to try and find some answers. Joined by bestfriend Bea and step-brother Sam, Cara goes on a big dramatic journey involving supernatural themes and a ghost student.

My actual opinion of the book is that it unfortunately got interesting towards the last five or so chapters. I struggled or rather avoided finishing the book because it wasn't that interesting. I know people who have absolutely adored the novel and sing it's praises but I can't.

I think one thing I enjoyed was the twist. But then that didn't do much. It was kinda blah at parts but there was a lot of imagery that made me see their ficticious world. There's so much inside Doyle's mind that I really really want her to write about (there's a lot of fairytales inside the book that are amazing!).

The Accident Season can be bought from Amazon UK and Amazon US.

Emancipated by M.G. Reyes

Emancipated by M.G. Reyes

Published by: Katherine Tegen books
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Tagline: No Parents, no limits, no alibis

If you haven't seen the book trailer for this, then you can here.

But be warned. The book and trailer are completely different.

The plot of this book is basically stuffing a bunch of teenagers in one house with the overall theme of emancipation from their parents. Each teen has a deep dark secret, or are just hiding stuff to make them more interesting. However it fails.

Unfortunately I wasn't emotionally invested into any of the characters and couldn't care less if they were in trouble or died. They just weren't there. Maybe it's the length of the book compared to the amount of backstory/story the characters had, or maybe it was just because their problems were painfully obvious.

Our characters are: Candice (actress/wannabe), Grace (letter-writer), Paolo (tennis guy), John-Michael (driver), Myra (coder) and Lucy (musician). Yes I have summed them up with one- two words simply because that's how I could tell the difference between them. I want to point out that Myra was useless. She added nothing to the story in my opinion, in fact they are all irrelevant because it's simply John-Michael's story that we get the most about. Of course there are little tidbits about everyone else, but he is the only reason we read to the end.

A most unimpressive book.

Emancipated can be bought in the UK in a hardback only at Amazon but in the states you can grab a copy from Amazon US

Talon by Julie Kagawa

Talon by Julie Kagawa

I am so disappointed in this book. For the past six months it's been on my to-read list and pile and the day I finally get it and the pages are read I was thoroughly disappointed. I made it to the second chapter where I decided I could not read on. For me it was just how the story was presented. I very rarely like multi-pov unless I have reason to like both and in this case I really didn't like Ember and Garret made me sigh.

Read with caution.
